Highlight | Rare marine life have often been reported in this archipelago, such as six Bryde's whales in January 2022 and another three in February 2023. There are many times that tourists on the boats had a chance to encounter a pod of Chinese white dolphins. Whale sharks, sea turtles, other sharks, and sea snakes can be found here too. Other marine animals include cuttlefish, squids, sea slugs, white-eyed moray eels, blue-spotted stingrays, lionfish, pufferfish, porcupinefish, batfish, razorfish, scorpionfish, clown fish, barracudas, yellow-stripe trevally, fusiliers, etc. |
This national marine park consists of 42 islands. The park offices are located on the mainland (Ban Don) and on Wua Talap Island. The accommodation provided by the park is on Wua Ta Lap Island, which has to be booked in advance. There are camping grounds on Wua Ta Lap Island and Sam Sao Island.
In addition to scuba diving and snorkeling, the park has kayaks for rent. Tham Lod (cave) at Koh Samsao is a good place for kayaking. There is also a hiking trail up the mountain to a viewpoint. Another must visit is a beautiful emerald lagoon on Mae Koh Island.
The flora here is also unique. One of the most interesting native orchids is Paphiopedilum angthong, which can be found in rock crevices and on the ground of Wua Ta Lap Island, Sam Sao Island, and Phe Island.
As for the fauna, there are the oriental pied hornbill, the dusky langur, the hairy-nosed otter, the island flying-fox, long-tailed macaque, etc.
Since the islands have an average depth of only 10 meters, there aren’t many diving spots for scuba divers. The most popular sites include Small Japanese Island (Koh Yepoon Lek), where there is a small cave to swim through, Japanese Rock (Hin Yepoon), and Kite Island (Koh Waw).
As for the snorkeling point, there are several places such as Small Japanese Island, Japanese Rock, Kite Island, Sam Sao Island, Na Thap Beach (Mae Koh Island), Aow Kha Beach (Wua Ta Lap Island), Tai Plao Island, etc.
