Preparing for Hammerhead Shark Diving in Yonaguni

Hammerhead Shark Diving

All diving in Yonaguni is drift diving in moderate to strong currents and need maintaining neutral buoyancy at depths of around 15-20 meters, with the seabed at 60 meters. To ensure safety, divers should meet the following minimum requirements before joining the dives:

  • Advanced Open Water certification or higher
  • Over 70 logged dives
  • Experience in drift diving
  • Good buoyancy control
  • Personal SMB (Safety Balloon) and the ability to deploy it independently
  • Last dive within the past 6 months

Essential Equipment

Diving in Yonaguni takes place during winter (December - April) when temperatures range from 20-25°C on land and 21-23°C in the water. Additionally, strong northern winds are common during this season. To stay comfortable and safe, divers should have the following gear:

  • 5mm wetsuit (can rent from local dive center, approx. 1,100 JPY/day)
  • Additional thermal protection (e.g., hood, gloves, socks)
  • Motion sickness medication
  • Dive computer
  • SMB or Safety Balloon
