Whale Swim in Okinawa

Every winter, from January to March, Okinawa offers a rare and breathtaking opportunity to swim alongside majestic humpback whales. These incredible creatures migrate to the warm waters of Okinawa to breed and nurture their young, creating an unforgettable experience for those who seek a close encounter with nature. Whale Swim Activity allows you to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat while ensuring a respectful and eco-friendly interaction.

Whale Swim – Participation Guidelines

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Participants must be qualified in scuba diving, free diving, or skin diving.
  • Must be able to put on and remove fins, masks, and snorkels independently.
  • Skin diving, flutter kicks, excessive close contact with whales, and diving underwater are strictly prohibited.

Rules & Safety Guidelines:

  • Due to seasonal strong north winds, the activity may be canceled depending on weather conditions.
  • Whale sightings are not guaranteed, as they are wild animals.
  • Entering the water is not allowed when other whale-watching boats are nearby.
  • Camera strobes and underwater lights is prohibited.
  • If bringing a camera or other equipment, please secure them with a lanyard, as lost items cannot be recovered.
  • Long fins (free diving fins or fins longer than 70.5 cm) are not allowed.
  • Do not swim toward the whales or engage in any behavior that may startle them.
  • When encountering a whale, remain still on the water's surface and observe calmly as the whale passes. Do not attempt to follow, as you will not be able to keep up and may cause distress to the whale.
  • If an accident occurs on board or while swimming, the tour may be canceled.
  • Whale swims activity are conducted only in the water around Okinawa's main island and are not permitted in Kerama National Park. Therefore, please refrain from using hashtags relate to "Kerama" on social media.
  • Failure to follow the rules will result in a stern warning, a ban from entering the water, and disqualification from future participation.
  • Please respect toward nature, whales, and all marine life.

Preparation for an Enjoyable Experience:

  • Get adequate rest and sleep before the tour.
  • Take motion sickness medication in advance, as sea conditions may be harsh.
